WE ARE ALL HUMANS

You are jogging along the sidewalk

It is 4:30 AM

Still dark

I am in my car driving to somewhere

I see you from behind

I cannot say for certain

The color of your skin

I try to guess your identity

Whether you are

Caucasian

Black

Or Hispanic

Seeing you in the darkness from a distance

I bet you were black

As I get closer I realize that I guessed wrong

In truth you are a Caucasian

My view of you from far away in the darkness

Really changes my perspective

We first came to this world

Innocent and genuine

With a sense of belonging

Nowhere in particular

But fail to keep up that innocence and genuineness

As society shapes us up

And sets us up in its prejudice mode

The next time I see someone

Jogging along the sidewalk in the darkness

I will simply think of a human being

I will refrain from guessing

Whether he or she is Caucasian Black or Hispanic

Color is an artificial boundary indeed

It gives us a false sense of separation

While truthfully we are indistinguishable

We are all Humans
